Can I use a lithium battery converter for a Ni-Cad battery mount?

You can get Lithium battery converters for some Ni-Cad battery mounts. I've seen them for DeWalt and other brands. I think lithium batteries have circuitry in them to prevent fires so when they fail they tend to fail all at once. That's apparently a good thing.

What is the difference between Ni-Cd and lithium-ion batteries?

Do Li batteries need a different charger than NiCad?

My understanding is that the Li batteries require a different and smarter charger than NiCad or even NiMH. Most of Li batteries I have seen have a thermal cutoff or even a circuit board that prevents charging or discharging unless everything is okay. In certain conditions, incorrectly charging can result in them catostophicly bursting into flames.

Will old Ni-MH cells be replaced with lithium-ion cells?

As I mentioned before - old Ni-MH cells will be replaced with lithium-ion cells. I’ll use a Samsung INR18650-25R cells rated for 2500mAh of capacity and 20A of continuous discharge current. As you already noticed - they were spot-welded before. I bought them as genuine, reclaimed, non-used cells from a trusted seller.
