EDF Energy Renewables said Friday it has contracted Nidec ASI to build a 49-MW battery storage project in the UK. It will use surplus electricity from wind farms at night to compress air so hard that it becomes a liquid at -196 Celsius. Then when there is a peak in demand in a day or a month, the liquid air will be warmed so it expands. The resulting rush of air will drive a turbine to make electricity, which can be sold back to the grid.

According to Wood Mackenzie, the UK is expected to lead Europe's large-scale energy storage installations, reaching 25.68 GWh by 2031, with substantial growth anticipated in 2024. According to Solar Media, by the end of 2022, the UK had approved 20.2 GW of large-scale energy storage projects, which could be completed within the next 3-4 years.
